Cakes, bakes & pastries: The best in North Wales

Nothing can beat a flaky pastry or a slice of cake (or both) - Especially when you know it’s made fresh & in house. In my experience, these seems quite difficult to stumble across in North Wales - So please be assured that these are the best of the best!

Keep reading to find out where the best bakeries, cafes, shops, and everything in between serve some of the best bakes in Gogledd Cymru.

Anglesey

The most impressive line of baked goods on Anglesey in my opinion is Dylan’s General Store in Menai Bridge (I may be biased as I work for Dylan’s!). Also situated on Conwy high street, the balance of traditional bakes and unique pastries will suit an array of taste buds. I recommend their range of maritozzi buns, sausage rolls, and their award-winning sourdough boules.

A must visit when heading to Newborough Beach is Tide at Halen Mon over in Brynsiencyn. This is the home place to the world famous Anglesey sea salt, and I'm so glad they manage to work the delicious delicacy into many of their bakes - Make sure to try is their chocolate chip and sea salt cookies.

You'll appreciate the care, effort and tasty flavours of the Melin Llynon doughnuts, found over in Llanddeusant. The hardest part will be choosing which ones to leave with! A recent favourite of mine was the hazelnut cream filled doughnut…Drool worthy.

For a traditional bakery that will be a hit at a picnic, head to Central Bakery in the busy castle town of Beaumaris. Make sure to head their early to avoid any lunchtime queues!

Conwy

North Wales is lacking in the sweet pastries department, so having Benjamin Lee Artisan Bakery in Llandudno is very much welcomed. As well as serving generously sized almond croissants, the artisan cakes can almost be too pretty to eat. Almost.

There's a good reason why Popty Conwy Bakery has queues running outside during the busy months - Traditional bakes for a very reasonable price. The school cakes and sausage rolls are crowd pleasers!

For a taste of sophistication, head to Isaac Simeon Artisan Patisserie on the Conwy High Street. The bakes are quite something, and would make for great gifts for a foodie friend.

Millie’s Bakes over on Colwyn Bay offers wonderfully delicious tray bakes which can custom ordered. Keep an eye out for spontaneous opening days in the shop if you fancy a one of sweet treat.

Siop Tandderwen Bakery is situated within the Spar over in Betws Y Coed, and is one of my highlights in the area. The tray bakes, pies and rocky road offerings are phenomenal.

Gwynedd

Head to Fran Las Coffee Shop for Vegan Pastries in Llanberis - Even as a meat eater, these are worth a try, along with their sumptuous from Hardlines.

Two Islands in Abersoch probably my number one recommendation for cakes, buns, coffee and small batch ice cream in North Wales. In busy days and weekends, make sure to head in early for a cinnamon bun.

As you can see from the main image, Melyn Cafe know how to do bakes well. Situated in a big yellow (melyn) building in Llanberis, you can find fresh cakes, buns and brownies.

It's great to see pastries being offered in a coffee truck! Tryc Coffi Gwenno over in Criccieth regularly stocks almond croissants, as well as other homemade bakes. The coffee is pretty wonderful too.

Popty Dref Bakery in Dolgellau and Barmouth is what everyone hopes a sit in bakery would be: An abundance of stacked cakes and bakes in the shop window, along with a wholesome breakfast and lunch menu. A must visit for the area.

You cannot go wrong with a cacen from Becws Islyn over in Aberdaron and Pwllheli. I recommend stocking your bag with a range of snacks from the shop before walking over to Ty Coch via the coastal path.

If Tandderwen Bakery is too far, then I recommend popping into Homebaked in Bangor - The baker used to work over in the Betws Y Coed Bakery! Homebaked very often introduce a new line of baked seasonally,so make sure to follow on socials for updates.

If you're after a traditional line of baked, head to Ty Becws over in Caernarfon, Bangor Market & Bethesda. And if you spot their scones on display in the shop window, make sure to devour and thank me later.

It was a delight to see that the Reuben’s Coffee Shop in Upper Bangor always have a fine selection of pastries along with their generously filled bagels. I recommend the almond croissants and cinnamon swirls.

Denbighshire

A fantastically trendy spot in Prestatyn is the Caffeina Coffee Shop - With their eye on the ball regarding trending bakes as well as bevvies, it’s a must visit.

Utter Indulgence - A cake shop who also takes custom made orders - is just a stones throw away from Caffeina. Keep an eye out for their Matilda cake slices and pudding pots, which is very much an indulgent multi layer chocolate cake.

Flintshire

The Bear Bakery are based in Flintshire - just a few hundred yards from the Chester boarder - So makes for a great pitstop on the way to the city centre. Expect fresh sourdough, croissants, cakes and cookies.

The bakery shop has benches outside and is opposite Cheshire Coffee Company.

Wrexham

Tabernacl Coffee House has been highly recommended for their range of cakes, cookies and pastries, as well as their light bites which uses sourdough bread from The Bear Bakery. I look forward to visiting!

Honey’s Bakery is situated on the riverside, and hosts a delicious looking range of fresh bakes such as scones and cakes. Again, another recommendation that I'm desperate to try.
